The basics of characters. Historical origins of language and writing. Identifying and classifying typefaces. In this class, you’ll earn your degree with measurements, type anatomy, history, and classifications. You might end up a valedictorian in letterspacing.

Michael Stinson, co-founder of TypeEd, will be teaching this 3-hour session. The Basics: Characters & Words is a beginning lecture-demonstration class for the type enthusiast, design dabbler, beginning design student or junior designer who possesses basic knowledge about graphic design. You’ll walk away understanding:

  • – What is type and where does it come from
  • – About the types of serifs, stories and other terms
  • – The importance of horizontal and vertical rhythm
  • – Absolute and relative measurements, how and when to use each
  • – Classifications, anatomy and why you should know these!

 

About Michael Stinson
Michael Stinson is a co-founder and the lead instructor at TypeEd and Creative Director at Ramp Creative. His work for client brands Quiksilver, Wet Seal, Agostoni Chocolate, CWS Capital Partners, Edwards Lifesciences and more has been recognized by numerous publications and industry organizations. Conversely, he has served on the design competition juries for Graphis Annual Reports, the One Show Design and the One Show Young Ones College Competition.
